What Do Good Readers Do?

The "magic" that makes good readers...

  • Visualize, or make a movie in their head.
  • Use Background Knowledge before, during, and after reading.  Make connections about
what you are reading to your own life, things in the world, or other books you have read.
  • Ask Questions while they are reading.
  • Make Predictions while they are reading and try to figure things out and make conclusions.
  • Determine the Most Important Ideas and Themes while reading.
  • Synthesize Information or keep track of their thinking while reading in order to get the overall meaning. This is thinking about the book sometimes when doing other activities..
  • Use Fix-up Strategies when they know they aren’t getting it:
    • rereading
    • skip ahead
    • ask questions
    • look up a word
    • read the passage aloud
    • figure out how the text is organized
    • speed up or slow down your reading
