What Do Good Readers Do?
The "magic" that makes good readers...
- Visualize, or make a movie in their head.
|
- Use Background Knowledge before, during, and after reading. Make connections about
what you are reading to your own life, things in the world, or other books you have read. |
- Ask Questions while they are reading.
|
- Make Predictions while they are reading and try to figure things out and make conclusions.
|
- Determine the Most Important Ideas and Themes while reading.
|
- Synthesize Information or keep track of their thinking while reading in order to get the overall meaning. This is thinking about the book sometimes when doing other activities..
|
- Use Fix-up Strategies when they know they aren’t getting it:
- rereading
- skip ahead
- ask questions
- look up a word
- read the passage aloud
- figure out how the text is organized
- speed up or slow down your reading
