• Committees & Parent Volunteers

    There are many ways to get involved as a parent at Furnace Woods School. If you are interested in volunteering or finding out more, please contact the PTA at FWSPTAPresident@gmail.com

    BEAUTIFICATION:  Maintain school gardens-plant bulbs, annuals and perennials, mulch gardens.  Work with our Scout troops and leaders to coordinate their assistance with planting.  Commitment: Spring and Fall, LOTS of volunteers are needed!

    BOOK FAIR:  Book fair chairperson and an assistant are responsible for coordinating with Scholastic, set-up and selling books at the Fair, and additional volunteers work at the Fair helping students select and purchase books.  Commitment:  Preparation and two weeks in April.

    BOX TOPS: Collect and redeem General Mills box tops to earn cash rewards for our school. Commitment: School year

    BY-LAWS:  Maintain and update the by-laws and policies and procedures of the Furnace Woods PTA. Commitment: School year

    CLASS PARENT COORDINATOR: Responsible for overseeing assignment of class parents, organizing Class Parent Tea in the fall and communicating with each grade’s parent coordinator.  Commitment:  School year

    CULTURAL ENRICHMENT COMMITTEE:  A committee of volunteers arranges guest speakers for classrooms and assemblies, attends events and provides feedback and handles paperwork.  This is a great way to see first-hand how the PTA enriches our children’s educational experience!  Commitment:  School year

    DIRECTORY:  Update the list of names and addresses of Furnace Woods School’s families using MS Word, coordinate with printer and handle distribution of directories to PTA members.  Commitment: School year

    FAIR:  Two co-chairs to oversee and coordinate all aspects of the Furnace Woods School Fair (volunteers, games, theme, and vendors).  In addition, MANY sub-committee volunteers are needed to organize and run each individual booth on fair day (cake walk, bake sale, popcorn, cotton candy etc).  The Fair is held in October and is our biggest fundraising event of the year!   Commitment:  End of August through early November plus short planning meeting in late Spring.

    FIELD DAY:  Two co-chairs oversee and coordinate all aspects of the FWS Field day in June (volunteers, scheduling, and games).  In addition, sub-committee volunteers are need to organize and run individual stations on field day.  Commitment March through June and Field Day.

    FAMILY FUN NIGHTS:  Organize and run family fun nights which are open to all Furnace Woods families (plan activities, get volunteers, send flyers, and coordinate supplies).  Past events have included, DJ night, Bingo night, Premier Athletic Club Family Night, Ice Cream Social.   Commitment:  School year (three events)

    FIFTH GRADE ACTIVITIES:  Fifth grade parents form the following committees: yearbook, fundraising, T-shirt, end of year party, end of year gifts and activities.  Commitment: School year

    HOSPITALITY:  Set up and clean-up of refreshments for PTA-sponsored events. Commitment: 6-8 nights during the school year

    MEMBERSHIP:  Sell membership cards and maintain membership lists for the PTA, report to the NYS PTA.  Commitment:  School year

    MOVING UP DAY:  A 4th grade parent volunteer is responsible for set up for the 5th grade Moving Up Day Ceremony, including coordination of food, gifts and decorations.  Commitment:  Preparation and  Moving Up Day (In June)

    NUTRITION, HEALTH & SAFETY:  For the health-conscious volunteer, this role involves planning school events for students such as: Healthy snack day, T.V. turn off week and others.  Commitment: School year

    PARENT EDUCATION:  Responsible for recruiting and organizing speakers on topics of interest to Furnace Woods parents.  Past speakers have included a bullying expert and our very own Chess Master. Commitment: Preparation, 2-3 PTA meetings during the school year.

    SCHOOL MERCHANDISE:  Volunteers order, market and sell school clothing (Spirit Wear) at school events such as the Fair, Meet the Teacher Nights and Evening Conferences.  Spirit Wear is a big seller for Pajama Day and School Spirit Day! Commitment:  School year

    SCHOOL PHOTOS:  Two volunteers arrange photo day and insure class and individual pictures are taken, follow up on orders and distribute photos to students.  Commitment:  Preparation and 2 photo days

    SCHOOL SPIRIT WEEK:  Students wear their Spirit Wear and celebrate their school spirit!  Volunteer coordinates week, organizes a special treat, and sends flyers home with outline of week.   Commitment:  Preparation and one week

    SILENT AUCTION:  Committee of volunteers who are responsible for soliciting and tracking donations, preparing boards with descriptions of donated items and recording purchases for the silent auction.  The Silent Auction takes place during the school Fair (our largest fundraiser) in October and historically contributes to more than half of the money raised on Fair Day!  Commitment:  August through early November

    STUDENT BIRTHDAYS:  Order ribbons and pencils for students’ birthdays.  Commitment: One day

    TOOL BOX:  Order and distribute tool boxes (school supply kits).  Commitment: Collect and place orders in the spring, coordinate distribution of toolboxes in August.

    WRAPPING PAPER:  The wrapping paper fundraiser is the PTA’s second largest money maker.  Sales also include gift items and seasonal merchandise and Furnace Woods earns between 40-50% on orders placed. Co-Chairs collect and place orders and communicate with the company, distribute orders and perform follow-up.  Commitment:  September-November
