Role of the Counselor - Senior Year

  • Keep in mind this is a list of activities the counselor must do with all students. Many of these responsibilities such as IEP’s and 504’s may be ongoing throughout the entire year. Also know the counselors are still available for individual meetings throughout the year by appointment.

     

    September:

    -          Resolve Schedule conflicts during beginning of the month.

    -          Back to school meeting

    -          Planning for college night

    -          Senior prescriptions are reviewed

    -          Senior prescriptions mailed out by 3rd week of September

    -          Go over College Applications through Naviance in the computer lab

    October:

    -          Review Resume through Naviance

    -          Financial Aid Night

    -          College fair – Yorktown High School

    -          Ongoing college applications

    -          Begin writing letters of recommendation

    -          Review transcripts

    -          Early decision / early action students apply

    November:

    -          Parent/teacher night

    -          Parent/teachers re-introduced to Naviance

    -          Early decision / early action due by the 1st for most colleges

    -          Continuing letters of recommendation

    -          Ongoing college applications reviews with students

    December:

    -          Review progress of at risk students

    -          SAT Results should be in and sent to schools

    -          Finalize college applications for regular decision

    -          Meet with at risk students and make a plan

    January:

    -          Discuss FASFA

    -          Early decision / early action letters arrive

    -          Mid year reports sent to colleges

    -          Update IEP goals

    -          Applications should be in

     

    February:

    -          CSE/504’s meetings

    -          Review midterm grades

    -          Ongoing college visits / military days

    -          Meet with at-risk seniors and their parents

    March:

    -          Transition workshops for seniors and senior parents

    April/May:

    -          College admission letters begin arriving

    -          Final college visits

    -          Meet with at risk students, their family, and assistant principal

    -          Meet with students to help make a decision

    o   Most colleges need decisions by May 1st

    June:

    -          Final transcripts are sent out

    -          Follow up meeting for at risk seniors as needed
