Students Show Everything They’ve Learned at Science Expo

As she watched students present their projects to classmates, Catherine Holzman saw a gym filled with glowing faces.
“They are excited about what they have done,” said Ms. Holzman, the STEM teacher at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School. “You can tell they are proud — and they should be.”
That pride was evident throughout the school’s annual Science Expo, which began with an all-day showcase for classmates and ended with an evening where 68 second and third graders showed their parents their creations.
“Many of these projects came right out of what they’ve learned in our science program,” Holzman said. “They really built on what we’ve given them in class. You can’t ask for anything more than that.”
Students in both grades volunteered to participate, designing displays that explained the science behind wind turbines, a lunar eclipse, chemical reactions and much more. Holzman said she was encouraged to see families be involved in the creation of the projects, which, from her point of view, have continued to improve year after year.
“We’re doing more science,” she said. “That has continued to open them up to more and more possibilities.”
