HHHS Band Students Get an Up-Close Look at the Pros

The Amo Brass, a chamber ensemble, perform for students at Hendrick Hudson High School on April 29, 2024.

During their eighth-period performance on Monday afternoon, members of the Amo Brass faced a surprise interruption: a fire drill. The unexpected delay was brief, and the chamber ensemble soon returned to the band room to not only complete its set but provide inspiring day for Hen Hud musicians.

“The experience of watching them perform live and the energy they perform with is just a lot different than listening to a recording” said Benjamin Acrish, the Hendrick Hudson High School Band Director. “This makes their perspective matter. It gave them a model to see what is possible.”

The all-day appearance by the ensemble, which consists of Yale University alumni, was made possible through a grant from Friends of Music. The concert series, now in its 70th season, unites professional musicians with area students through its Partnership in Education Program.

Friends of Music brought musicians to work with Hen Hud’s orchestra in recent years, including earlier this year, but this marked the first time band members enjoyed the experience.

During their visit, Amo Brass not only performed, ensemble members led workshops and worked closely with the students on their music. They also answered questions and talked about their experience as musicians.

Mr. Acrish said the day was eye-opening for his students because it was so visceral. They experienced live music in a very intimate setting and had an opportunity to learn more from professionals.

“It’s an enormous opportunity,” Mr. Acrish said. “You don’t necessarily see the benefits from this right away. It may take a while to show itself, but they will really benefit from today.”
