A New Tradition: First Graders Celebrate the 120th Day of School

Buchanan-Verplanck and Furnace Woods first graders started a fun new tradition this year—celebrating the 120th day of school! Since 120 is the counting goal for first grade, this milestone offered the perfect opportunity for some creative learning and community celebration.
In the past, both schools marked the 100th day of school, but this year Kindergarten classes took the lead on that occasion. With first graders reaching for 120 as their academic benchmark—learning to read, write, and count to this number—it made sense to give them their own special day.
Students participated in a variety of hands-on activities, including building with 120 items, creating collections of 120, and playing games that featured the number. At Furnace Woods, students designed colorful 120-themed t-shirts, while Buchanan-Verplanck students showcased their creativity through posters.
The day wrapped up with a lively grade-level parade, making the first-ever 120th Day of School celebration one to remember!
