Balloons Over Broadway Project Leads to Unique Designs

Third-grade students at Frank G. Lindsey designed their own parade balloons.

Third-grade students at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School completed an exciting, Thanksgiving Day-inspired project after reading the book “Balloons Over Broadway.” The book tells the story of Tony Sarg, the marionette maker who invented the iconic balloons we admire each year during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Inspired by Sarg’s innovation, the students were tasked with designing their own parade balloons. For the project, they each created a unique balloon design. They also wrote persuasive letters to Macy’s that explained why their designs should be featured in next year’s parade.

“The results were fantastic,” teacher Danielle Cohen said. “The students had so much fun bringing their ideas to life, and their letters showcased their creativity and persuasive writing skills.”
