Career Day Gives Frank G. Lindsey Students a Look at STEAM Professions

Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School came alive with curiosity and inspiration on Friday, March 27, as third, fourth, and fifth graders took part in the school’s annual STEAM Career Day. The event, organized by STEAM teacher Rachel Naraine, featured 24 different presentations from professionals representing a wide range of careers, including engineers, law enforcement officers, artists, physicians, and more.
“The reaction of the students was really great,” Ms. Naraine said. “They asked a lot of very good, insightful questions. They wanted to know more about what our presenters did or how they got their job. And their reactions to the activities have been fun to watch.”
Throughout the day, classrooms transformed into interactive learning spaces where students gained firsthand insight into the many ways science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics are used in the real world. The event gave students the opportunity to ask questions, explore new interests, and imagine their own futures in STEAM-related fields.
“The students are able to see these jobs in a different way by having a physical person or even a virtual person in front of them,” Ms. Naraine said. “They can listen, see what they do, and how it relates to STEAM. Some of the engineers had a coding activity. Our students can say, ‘Oh, I’m coding now. My job could possibly look like this when I grow up.’”
The event would not have been possible without help from our partners at the Hendrick Hudson Education Association, who provided the presenters with lunch. The food was arranged by Martin Kenneally, the district’s Director of Food Services.
“This was a major undertaking and a cherished experience for our students,” Superintendent of Schools Michael A. Tromblee said.
