FGL Classes Explore Engineering with a NASA Challenge

Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Haviland’s third graders at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School took on an exciting NASA challenge — designing and building their own robotic arms!

Inspired by the Hubble Space Telescope, students learned that Mrs. Cohen’s grandfather was part of the team that built the famous telescope, which was launched in 1990 and is still in use today. She even shared historical photos of him working on this incredible project.

During class, the young engineers faced a challenge similar to the one NASA faced. Since real engineers couldn't touch the Hubble Space Telescope due to its delicate instruments, students had to create a robotic arm to move three erasers — all without using their hands!

Armed with classroom materials like popsicle sticks, paperclips, tape and rubber bands, students problem-solved, tested and refined their designs. This hands-on activity helped them think like real engineers, applying creativity and teamwork, and relying on their perseverance.

Way to go, future innovators!
