Physical Education Classes Construct Their Own Cornucopia

With Thanksgiving just two weeks away, students at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School enjoyed a timely activity in physical education classes this week.

The lesson was led by teacher John Glashoff and student teacher Gerald Gentile. The students used hula hoops to construct a cornucopia — a horn-shaped basket often pictured overflowing with food and flowers that has long been a symbol of Thanksgiving. This time, the students built their cornucopia to catch a furry ball that they tossed from a cone about 10 feet away.

The students were split into four groups and had to take turns. One at a time, they attempted to toss the ball into the cornucopia. If they were successful, the team received a new ball. If not, the student who threw the ball had to retrieve it and return the ball to the teammate who had the next turn.

The team who had the most successful throws by the end was declared the winner.

The game required teamwork, fine-motor skills and plenty of patience. The students, who were kindergarteners in Marisa D’Itri’s class, clearly enjoyed the activity. They shared plenty of smiles and a few even broke out into spontaneous dance routines during the fun competition.
