Professional Development Opportunities Strengthens Knowledge of New Program

Teachers at Hendrick Hudson elementary schools had professional development for a new ELA program.

Elementary school teachers at Buchanan-Verplanck, Frank G. Lindsey and Furnace Woods received professional development this month on HMH Into Reading, the all-encompassing English Language Arts program in use in the Hendrick Hudson School District for the first time this school year.

Teachers received training on the new program during Monday’s Early Release Day. They also worked recently with Janine Risole, the district’s Elementary Literacy Coach, at the building and grade levels to plan and map learning modules for future lessons.

“It was an amazing experience that everyone was very excited about,” Risole said. “I was so proud of the team working collaboratively and getting so much done.”

Into Reading was one of two ELA programs piloted in Hendrick Hudson elementary schools last school year. After teacher feedback, the program was selected and purchased by the district earlier this year.
