Second Graders Explore During Hands-On Lesson

Second-grade students at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School created 3D models of playground equipment.

Students in Kerri Houlahan and Luann Bieronski’s second-grade class at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School have been busy enjoying the hands-on part of the science curriculum. The students have explored the question, “Why are certain materials used for specific purposes?”

During this process, they were assigned a project to design and build a three-dimensional model of a piece of playground equipment. The children were split into groups and each group was given a tray of objects to use that included popsicle sticks, paper, rubber bands, pipe cleaners, tape, and straws. They were required to create either a slide, monkey bars, a swing or a see-saw.

Some of the final projects the class produced are pictured along with a group of students.
