Second graders at Furnace Woods Elementary School recently embarked on an exciting and meaningful journey into the world of severe weather. What began as a study of storms quickly grew into an adventure filled with discovery, creativity, and hands-on learning.

As they explored hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, and floods, students learned how these powerful forces of nature shape communities, change landscapes, and affect everyday life. Through informational texts and engaging stories, they built their knowledge, then expressed their understanding by writing poems, detailed passages, and creative pieces of their own.

A special highlight of the unit was a visit from a scientist, who brought real-world learning into our classroom. Students discovered how erosion and natural forces slowly reshape the land over time, deepening their understanding of how weather impacts the world around us.

The excitement continued as students stepped into the role of engineers. Using what they had learned, they designed, built, and tested structures meant to protect buildings from severe weather. With careful planning and creative problem-solving, they brought their ideas to life in thoughtful and innovative ways.

“We are so proud of our students for their curiosity, creativity, and growing understanding of the powerful forces of nature,” second grade teacher Tammy Emanuelo said.
