Senator Harckham Talks About Important Issues with Hen Hud Students

A group of Hendrick Hudson High School students met on Tuesday, June 11 with New York State Senator Pete Harckham to discuss important issues and learn more about the role of state government.

Led by members of the school’s Student Advisory Council, who were joined by HHHS Principal Lauren Scollins, Director of Guidance Dr. Aaron Kleinman, Assistant Director for Pupil Personnel Services Christopher Moreno, and Superintendent of Schools Michael A. Tromblee, the wide-ranging discussion with Senator Harckham touched on environmental issues, education equality, bipartisanship and more.

The students used the meeting as an opportunity to ask Senator Harckham — who represents the 40th Senate District — questions as a follow up to a Town Hall event held earlier this spring.

“It was great to be invited to @henhudschools to speak with its Student Advisory Council about issues students are passionate about and what the state government is doing to address them,” Senator Harckham said later on his social media accounts.

The students inquired about what legislation Senator Harckham is pursuing currently and how someone in his position interacts with local and federal governments.

When asked by one student about his role as a politician, Senator Harckham said, “I view it as public service.”

With his support, the New York State Senate last week approved an additional funding grant of $1 million for the Hendrick Hudson School District. Superintendent Tromblee said the grant will be used to directly support students and offset the loss of revenue from the closing of Indian Point.
