Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter joined local and New York State lawmakers in calling for action to ensure the safe, rapid, and thorough decommissioning and site restoration at Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC), located within district boundaries.
In short, Superintendent Hochreiter has expressed support for the prompt, thorough and safe decommissioning and site restoration at IPEC, but expressed concerns and posed questions with regards to Indian Point's proximity to local schools.
In 2017, the owner of IPEC agreed to close the two remaining operating units at the site. On January 23, 2020, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced that it was considering approval of an application by Entergy to transfer the Indian Point license to Holtec for decommissioning.
Decommissioning, which involves radiological clean-up and dismantling a nuclear facility, is extremely demanding both technically and financially. The district is currently seeking assurances from Holtec that student safety will not be compromised or at risk during this process.
