Driving Innovation at Furnace Woods

Fifth graders in Valier Haviland’s S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) class at Furnace Woods were recently challenged to invent a self-driving construction vehicle using littleBits electronic building blocks.

First, the students created circuit systems that could power a self-driving car. They then collaborated to add features to the car that would transform it into a construction vehicle. The goal was to move logs (in this case, toothpicks) from one side of the “construction site” to another.

“The students had a blast with this invention-based learning opportunity,” said Haviland.
