Social Emotional Learning Tops Agenda at K-5 Leadership Week 2019

Students thrive in a school environment where they feel safe and comfortable. That simple assumption drove much of the activity during Leadership Week, the annual summertime event where more than 40 Hen Hud elementary teacher leaders and administrators examine research and trends impacting students and integrate them into their plans for the new school year.

Teachers had the opportunity to delve into a new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum that will be introduced this fall for grades K-5. SEL is the process by which children understand and manage their emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Research has shown that a SEL curriculum leads to a more empathetic and safe learning environment for students. With a school-wide atmosphere of well-being, children are ready to learn.

Second Step is the SEL curriculum the district has adopted for its three elementary schools. The program’s stated goal is to “transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive.” During Leadership Week, K-5 teachers had the opportunity to explore the program and develop their plans for its rollout. 

SEL is holistic by nature, and parents will be encouraged to be actively involved in the new program. Each school will provide families with information on SEL initiatives, as well as an access code for online resources and videos that can be viewed at home.
