Hen Hud Senior Nick Hiltsley Scores 1000th Point
On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, Hendrick Hudson senior basketball player Nick Hiltsley scored his 1,000th point, becoming only the eighth player to do so in the school’s history, among both boys and girls. The 1,000th point occurred during a victory over Croton-Harmon in the annual Gazette Cup Game.
Nick’s 1,000th point was his 46th point of the game, which happened to tie a school record with Mack Lee, Class of 1965, for the most points in a game for Hendrick Hudson boys’ basketball. Nick finished his high school career with a total of 1,023 points.
Nick has been starting for head coach Jordan Hirsch since arriving on the team as a sophomore. His work on the court has led the Sailors to a League Championship this past season, their second in the past four years. He was voted All-League and All-Section during the league championship campaign, and also named the Most Valuable Player in the league by coaches.
A two-sport standout, Nick is also a decorated Hendrick Hudson baseball player. He has been All League, All Section Honorable Mention and the League Pitcher of the Year.
Nick joins the following Hendrick Hudson alumni who surpassed 1,000 points in their high school careers:
- Class of 1967- Bruce Fulgum- 1,065 points
- Class of 1986- Michele Staten- 1,112 points
- Class of 1987- Kathleen Staten- 1,777 points
- Class of 1988- Joan Staten- 1,054 points
- Class of 1989- Seth Heaton- 1,145 points
- Class of 2007- Jessica Harris- 1,493 points
- Class of 2020- Caitlin Weimar- 1,617 points
“I couldn't be happier for Nick that he was able to have the senior season he had, under so much uncertainty,” said head coach Jordan Hirsch. “He has dedicated so much of his time to maximizing his potential as a basketball player, and to see that commitment validated with such a tremendous personal accomplishment is really special. It brings me a lot of joy, not only as a coach, but as an alumnus of Hendrick Hudson to see Nick join two of our program's finest, Bruce Fulgum and Seth Heaton, atop our all-time scoring list.”
On March 25, Hen Hud Athletic Director Tom Baker presented Nick with the ball with which he scored his 1,000th point. Former graduates and 1,000+ players Seth Heaton and Bruce Fulgum were in attendance and shared in the celebration.
