Letter from Laura Neier, Executive Director of Educational Support Services Regarding Chromebooks

Dear Hen Hud Families,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well, and ready for summer!

Chromebooks have played a vital role in our lives since March of 2020 when our school doors first closed and virtual learning began.  Students and staff alike have relied on chromebooks to check in with each other, participate in learning activities, go on virtual field trips, assess learning, and more. Chromebooks have become a regular part of a student’s life, just as much as a notebook and pencil.

As the school year winds down, and schools close to students for the summer, our technology team is busy preparing for the 2021-22 school year.  As part of our preparation, we will need to collect some, but not all, of the student chromebooks.  Grades K-4, 8 and 12 will be required to return their assigned chromebook AND charging cable before the end of the school year.  All other grades will keep their chromebook and charging cable for the summer. 

Grades K-4 will turn in their assigned chromebook and charging cable to their classroom teacher beginning on June 21st, so that they can be cleaned and updated over the summer. If your child does not have access to a device at home, your child may retain the device until June 23rd. 

Grades 5-7 will keep their current chromebook and charging cable over the summer, to be used at BMMS in the fall. 

Grade 8 will turn in their assigned chromebook and charging cable on either June 18th and June 21s, during the school day.  Grade 8 students will receive a new chromebook when they enter 9th grade in the fall, which they will keep for the duration of their high school career.

Grades 9-11 students will keep their current chromebook and charging cable over the summer, to be used again in the fall.

Grade 12 students will turn in their chromebook and charging cable on June 10th or June 11th.

If your child is 100% remote and in grades K-4, 8, or 12, please bring your child’s device to the Edutek Technology Offices at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School on Thursday, June 24 from 12-3 p.m. or Friday, June 25, 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  The Edutek offices are located at the end of the building, past the school’s main office entrance.  If your child is not returning to Hendrick Hudson in the fall, please utilize these times to return your child’s chromebook and charger.

Dates to Remember:

  • June 10 & 11: Seniors return chromebook and charger to HHHS Library
  • June 18 & 21: 8th grade students return chromebook and charger to BMMS Library
  • June 21-23: K-4 students return chromebook and charger to their classroom teacher
  • June 24 & 25: Remote students grades K-4, 8 and 12 and students not returning to Hen Hud in the fall, return chromebook and charger to Edutek offices at FGL Elementar
  • More detailed and specific information regarding chromebook returns will be communicated by your child’s school building in the days to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child’s chromebook is damaged, what should I do?

If your child’s chromebook is damaged and needs repair, please complete a Help Desk ticket to have this issue resolved as soon as possible.  Our technicians will need time to order replacement parts and/or repair the damage before the 2021-22 school year starts, so we appreciate your diligence with reporting any issues.

My child lost the charging cable, what do I do?

Please put a Help Desk ticket in to report the lost charging cable.  We will order a replacement, but we will need to bill you for the cost. 

How do I complete a Help Desk ticket?

Students and families can reach our help desk by clicking on “Help Desk” on the Instructional Technology page of the school district website. 

Am I responsible for lost or damaged chromebooks or chargers?

Yes, you as the family are responsible for lost or damaged devices when not in school.  You may purchase insurance for your child’s device to protect yourself from any charges that could incur due to theft or damages. 

How do I purchase insurance?

Information regarding insurance through Worth Ave is posted on the district website.  If you currently have insurance, you are covered through August 31, 2021.  You may purchase insurance for the 2021-22 school year by clicking here.

How should I store my child’s chromebook for the summer?

How long will my child keep this current chromebook?

Students will keep their current chromebook until they reach either grade 1, 5 or 9. At that point they will receive a new chromebook. 

Do students have to use a district-assigned chromebook or can they use a personal device?

K-8 students are required to use a district-assigned device during the school day, but 9-12 students may bring their own devices to school.  However, we are unable to provide technical support for personal devices, nor are we able to connect personal devices to the school’s network.

If my student isn’t on the school WiFi network, how can my student connect to the WiFi?

Students can connect to the BYOD WiFi network.  This is similar to a guest network that you may find at a public library or coffee shop.
