Hendrick Hudson Musicians Featured At State Music Conference

Twenty-six musicians represented the Hendrick Hudson School District as members of the NY-ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) Honor Choirs this week. The performances took place at the NYSSMA Summer Conference in Albany under conductors Maria Ellis and Marques Garrett.

The honor choirs are open to students from all over New York State. Choral Directors Erica Denler and Kimberly Dunkin nominated each of their students with letters of recommendation, and students learned and prepared their music independently before traveling to rehearse with their respective full choir. This year's programs featured folk songs, spirituals, newly published originals, and even some musical theater. The program featured many pieces by female composers and BIPOC composers.

The NYSSMA summer conference is also a fantastic learning opportunity for teachers. Dunkin and Denler spent four days in workshops focused on choral conducting, concert programming, rehearsal techniques, and inclusivity. Both teachers also participated in the Director’s Chorus, where they were able to perform under the direction of Dr. Alissa Rowe from Louisiana State University.

Bravo to all participants for their hard work and commitment! Students below (*) had featured solos.
